What Happened

Meta has delayed the launch of its next-generation AI model, codenamed Avocado, from March to at least May 2026. The reason: internal testing showed Avocado underperforming compared to leading models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in key areas including logical reasoning, coding, and writing.

Perhaps more tellingly, Meta's AI leadership reportedly discussed temporarily licensing Google's Gemini technology to power certain Meta products while Avocado is brought up to competitive performance. No decision has been made on the licensing arrangement, but the fact that it was discussed at all reveals how seriously Meta views the gap.

The Performance Gap

According to reports based on internal testing:

  • Avocado outperforms Meta's previous flagship model and Google's older Gemini 2.5
  • Avocado underperforms Google's current Gemini 3.0, which launched in November 2025
  • Avocado trails the latest models from OpenAI (GPT-5.4) and Anthropic (Claude Opus 4.6) across multiple benchmarks

The gap is particularly pronounced in logical reasoning and coding — the two areas where enterprise and developer adoption is most sensitive to model quality. In an AI market where the difference between "best" and "third-best" determines which model gets integrated into developer workflows, being behind on reasoning and coding is a significant competitive problem.

A Pattern of Delays

Avocado isn't Meta's first AI model delay:

  • Llama 4 was delayed after failing to meet internal benchmarks
  • Behemoth, another flagship model, was delayed due to engineering challenges
  • Avocado was originally targeted for late 2025, then pushed to March 2026, and now May 2026

That's an enormous capital commitment for a company whose AI models consistently trail the competition. The market is watching closely: if Avocado doesn't deliver when it eventually launches, questions about Meta's AI strategy — and whether the spending is justified — will intensify.

The Gemini Licensing Discussion

The most revealing detail is that Meta's AI leadership discussed licensing Google's Gemini technology as a temporary solution. For a company that has positioned itself as an open-source AI leader through the Llama model family, relying on a competitor's proprietary model would be a significant strategic reversal.

The discussion reflects a practical reality: Meta's products — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Meta AI assistant — need competitive AI capabilities now, not when Avocado is ready. If the alternative is shipping inferior AI experiences to billions of users, licensing a better model starts to look rational.

Whether Meta actually pursues this path remains unclear. But the fact that it's on the table tells you everything about where they think Avocado stands relative to the competition.

If you're building on Llama models and waiting for the next generation, adjust your expectations. Meta's open-source model releases typically follow their internal model development, so a delay in Avocado likely means a delay in the next open-source Llama release as well.

Meta's situation reinforces the case for model abstraction in your AI applications. If you've built your product around a single model provider, a delay like this can stall your roadmap. The companies that can swap between models — Llama, GPT, Claude, Gemini — based on availability and performance will weather these shifts better.

OpenAI and Anthropic are AI-first companies where model development is the entire business. Google DeepMind has decades of research depth. Meta is a social media company trying to compete with AI labs, and the Avocado delay suggests that transformation is harder than writing a check.

The delay also raises questions about open-source AI's viability at the frontier. Meta's open-source strategy with Llama has been genuinely valuable for the developer community. But if Meta can't keep up with closed-source competitors, the open-source models will increasingly lag behind — and developers will migrate to the APIs that offer the best performance, regardless of licensing.
